Getting out to the slide — which is not mentioned in any park brochures and is not on a trail — is no small feat.
Nature doesn’t get much more awe-inspiring than the giant sequoias, expansive granite slabs and gushing waterfalls of Yosemite National Park. Many of us are familiar with hiking and backpacking through, but one of the most unusual ways to experience the park is to ride a giant waterslide through it. During just a few weeks a year in the lesser-explored northeastern part of the park, a few bold souls actually do that.
When asked about that sign, and what climbing gear might be required, park spokesman Scott Gediman said he didn’t have any comment specifically on the Tenaya Creek area. He did not respond to questions about whether there had ever been injuries or rescue incidents in the area. “However, we urge visitors to be very careful around and in all water sources within the park,” he wrote in an email.Morris had heard rumors of the feature before, but had never looked into it.
Those who have visited recommend grippy shoes, a good sense of balance and an understanding that there’s no cell service. Also: lots of bug spray. At the moment, there’s standing water in the area, and every time Morris slowed down or stopped hiking, mosquitoes were all over him. “They just cover you,” he says.
