Every Sunday at 202 Hometown Tacos, the Pittsburgh Browns Backers gather to woof Cleveland to victory – no Terrible Towels allowed.
So began the unceasing search for a permanent Cleveland home in Pittsburgh. The Oregon helped build the club’s reputation to the point where ESPN sent a cameraman to the Backers’ bar for a Sunday night matchup between Cleveland and Pittsburgh in 2003 .
Cleveland played at Pittsburgh in November 2007, and both teams entered the game with winning records. And with 11:14 to play, former Brown Josh Cribbs returned his own muffed kickoff 100 yards to give Cleveland a 28-24 lead on the road. “The owner of the bar thought the top floor was going to cave in,” Shirilla said. “We were going crazy.”
The owners grew old and had to sell the bar. The new owner was a Browns fan, and he let the Backers use “Mario’s,” as the bar was renamed, every Sunday from 2018-2020. But the pandemic forced him to close their location. He let them use a different Mario’s afterward, but that location also welcomes Bills fans.
