Manchester United fans had to wait a long time to see Ruud van Nistelrooy finally play for their club. The old adage goes that players don’t come back from serious knee injuries - they're never the ‘same player’ again.

But amid fears over fatigue and a groin injury, Ferguson started his No.10 on the bench against Villa, Solskjaer spearheading a team that lined up in the 4-5-1 formation that had become the norm. Ferguson had little choice but to usher on a half-fit Van Nistelrooy in place of Chadwick on 56 minutes, substituting the substitute.
It was a surprise to absolutely nobody when they made it 3-2 two minutes later. Of course, it was Van Nistelrooy again, who rounded Schmeichel after being played through by Solskjaer. As Ferguson has since written in his autobiography, the Dutchman had an obsession for scoring goals that was borne in that period in the 2001/02 season.
