San Antonio is set for another shot at professional football, as the XFL announced Sunday that the Alamodome will host one of eight teams as the league relaunches in 2023.
The reboot will mark the third iteration of the XFL, which originally launched in 2001 under former World Wrestling Entertainment owner Vince McMahon. The league folded after its first season and remained dormant until McMahon led a revival in 2018, with a return to the field in 2020. San Antonio coach Ward took the stage alongside former Dallas Cowboys coach Wade Phillips, who will lead Houston’s XFL team, and longtime University of Oklahoma coach Bob Stoops, who is taking the reins in Arlington.
The list of failures includes the Gunslingers of the USFL , the Wings of the World Football League , the Riders of the World League of American Football , the Texans of the Canadian Football League , the Force and Talons of the Arena Football League, and the Commanders of the Alliance of American Football .
