Christian Pulisic's brave finish gave the U.S. men’s national team a 1-0 victory over Iran and clinched a Round of 16 date with the Netherlands.
He and players maintained faith that the goals would come, though, in a win-or-go-home versus Iran.
With every passing minute, and every crescendoing chant from an overwhelmingly pro-Iranian crowd, tension grew. Weah couldn’t quite find Pulisic with a cut-back. Dest beat two men, but had his left-footed shot from the top of the box blocked. The closing stages, though, were excruciating. The U.S. made two injury-enforced changes — Josh Sargent also came off hobbling — and then, midway through the second half, it made two tactical changes to cede control, set up shop and cling to its one-goal lead. Kellyn Acosta and Walker Zimmerman entered the fray. The U.S. switched to a 5-4-1. Zimmerman was mountainous, winning header after header as Iran peppered the U.S. backline with hopeful balls.
Iranian players howled for a penalty, and crowded around the referee. But his video assistants were unmoved.
