Extra money has been approved for the Oakdene development in St Ann's

Work is set to begin on the building of new council houses to transform an 'unloved' area of land in St Ann's. Plans for 24 new homes on the site of the former Oakdene Day Centre were approved in February 2023, comprising 15 houses and nine flats.

An initial hunt for contractors had limited success due to poor market conditions at the time, but a second attempt saw four contractors coming forward. It means that an extra £865,000 has now been approved to complete the project, with workers expected on-site in July. The extra money is needed mostly because of increased labour and material costs since the scheme was originally budgeted. Executive councillors approved the extra funding at a Council House meeting on Tuesday .The homes will be built on the site of the former Oakdene Day Centre on Woodborough Road, which closed in 2019 before its demolition in January 2020. The council says the development will "meet need from the waiting list" and reduce pressure on its homelessness spending.

Councillor Corall Jenkins, one of those who represents St Ann's for Labour, said: "This is a site that has been unloved for some time and this will do a lot to enhance the area." The Morro Partnership has been appointed to construct the project, which will feature car charging points and solar panels for some properties.

People living near the site have previously expressed mixed views over the council housing plan, but the council says providing affordable housing is crucial. The project is expected to be finished next year and Councillor Jay Hayes, Nottingham's portfolio holder for housing, said the new homes would be modular-built, contributing to the council's carbon-neutral ambition.
