Michael Rosen, with David and Ben Crystal, explore Shakespeare in everyday speech.
“To be or not to be...” “All the world's a stage…” “A horse, a horse, my kingdom for a horse…”
William Shakespeare penned some of the most famous lines in the English language. But for every notable quote from the Bard, there are more obscure ones that some of us use every day. Shakespeare’s language was so timeless and relatable, many of his phrases have entered everyday speech without us realising they come from him., listeners sent in examples of less obvious Shakespeare phrases that they use. Michael Rosen was joined by linguist David Crystal and his son, actor-producer Ben Crystal, to look at some of these and discuss exactly why so many of Shakespeare’s sayings have slipped into our everyday chat.“The lady doth protest too much, methinks.
Taken from Hamlet, this is a famous line, but perhaps its origin is less well-known. Spoken by Gertrude as she watches the play within the play and witnesses an actor dramatically espouse that they would never remarry if their husband were to die , it’s now entered regular speech as an indicator of a person’s insincerity.
Another line from King Lear and significant as it sets in motion the chain of events that will lead to his downfall. Lear demands affection from his daughters. While two of them gush is a convincing way, his youngest daughter Cordelia, when asked to how she can match her sisters loving words says ‘nothing’. Her furious father tells her that basically nothing means nothing and she needs to offer something. Though, as her sisters have lied about their affection, her words are more significant.
