A burial site for people who can’t afford funerals will soon be created in Lancashire woodland
Named Helms Wood, the venture is being pioneered by the Plotbank charity which has been formed with the goals of nature conservation and ensuring everyone can access a final resting place.
Plotbank was registered as a charity 12 months ago with the aim of reducing the negative financial and emotional impact of funeral poverty, while enhancing biodiversity and sustainability. Its mission is to combat funeral poverty in England, with the charity arguing that “it's everyone's right to have a peaceful final resting place regardless of their financial or social status”.
The charity will rely on donations and as such, its plots will be reserved for those in “genuine financial need”. It will primarily operate through referrals but has said it will encourage individual requests for help.
