One woman died in a house fire Wednesday morning in New Chicago. The woman has not yet been identified.
Firefighters found the woman’s body in the house, according to New Chicago Fire Chief Joe Eakins, who said she was deceased when they found her. She has not been identified yet.Eakins said the state fire marshal and a Northern Indiana Public Service Co. crew were on the scene. By Wednesday night, he said NIPSCO workers were still on the scene.
A NIPSCO spokesperson said they were made aware of the incident at approximately 11:27 am., and personnel were dispatched to the site to assist first responders and ensure the safety of the area.Neighbors told news outlets the house exploded and the incident was being investigated as a possible natural gas explosion.Firefighters from New Chicago, Lake Station and Hobart battled the blaze that fully engulfed the house, Eakins said.
Eakins said a house east of the structure was saved by firefighters, but its siding still was melted. He said firefighters put a continuous spray of water on side of the house to keep heat from radiating against it. ”Firefighters kept it from going inside,” he said.Eakins said firefighters spent about five hours at the scene.
”All the firefighters are feeling bad, being so close to the holidays. We hate seeing something like this happen,” he said.Advertisement
