A 25-year-old North County woman was found in her San Diego County jail cell early Tuesday and died, becoming the 12th person to die in county custody this year.
According to the Sheriff’s Department, Granillo was found unresponsive in her cell during a routine safety check about 2 a.m. Tuesday. She reportedly had been arrested last Friday on suspicion of violating a court order. Naloxone is a brand-name medication designed to counter the effects of an opioid overdose. The department recently began making the drug more broadly available in jails in an effort to reduce deaths.Granillo — who had recently lived in Escondido, according to public databases — had several criminal cases filed against her, court records show. The district attorney’s office was not immediately able to provide details of the charges.
The state auditor said conditions were so dangerous in San Diego County jails that new legislation was needed to reform the facilities. Longtime Sheriff Bill Gore retired in mid-term on the same day the report was released.analyzed state mortality data to confirm that San Diego County had the highest death rate in its jails among California’s most populated counties.
