'Without football I wouldn't be here today': Meet the world's first transgender referee 💬 Lucy Clark tells samcunningham about the highs and lows of her journey – and love for the game TransDayOfVisibility
Lucy Clark was only a child when she first realised she was living inside the wrong body. This was the start of the 80s – Clark is 51 years old now – back when there were no smartphones or Google for her to search for explanations of how she was feeling, or to find forums where others discussed feeling the same way. The term “”, while coined in 1965 by psychiatrist John F Oliven, would not become commonplace until two decades later.
Even then, they lived a double life for another 15 years. “I had my life as me, and my life that people would see publicly as the dead person.” She would have to lie down, her symptoms including pain in the jaw and a deep ache all the way down her left arm, as well as pain in her chest. She would breathe heavily for a couple of minutes before the pain subsided.
“I told the FA I was transitioning. They said they’d never had this before but they’d support me however they could. I said this is me, this is who I am, when I come back next year I’m coming back as the true me.” Another time, she ran the line for a cup semi-final and was abused by around 12 adults behind her. “When it’s 10,000 people you don’t hear a word,” she says. “The less people the more you hear.” The taunts “started from the first minute” and they referred to her as “it” and called her a “lesbian”. And it got worse.
Clark, however, is unflinching in her view that trans women should be allowed to play in competitive sports alongside other women. “I believe trans women should be able to play all sports against women,” she says. “However, I do believe that to play it competitively they need to tick the boxes of the organisation.
