The annual online fundraiser on Thursday is in its second year, with goals of raising $2 million

It was after wading through hundreds of emails from nonprofits asking for donations one Tuesday after Thanksgiving that Lauren Welch had her lightbulb moment.

This year, 327 organizations are participating — nearly triple the 120 from last year — with a goal of raising $2 million.Steve and Marie Hoveln are starting a San Diego chapter of the nonprofit Sleep in Heavenly Peace to builds beds for children in need For Groundwork San Diego, a nonprofit that works in the Chollas Creek, a watershed in the city that drains into the San Diego Bay, environmental and climate justice programs rely mainly on grants and contracts, which provide almost no overhead and no discretionary funding, said executive director Leslie Reynolds.

First-grade students participate in an ArtReach San Diego program at Jefferson Elementary school in May 2022. For many of the nonprofits involved, San Diego Gives helps raise not just money but also awareness for their causes. Though they’ve always served women veterans and their children in the area, the Foundation for Women Warriors recently moved its headquarters to San Diego, and CEO Jodie Grenier said they hope San Diego Gives will help show the organization is a trusted local resource.
