Former Royal Air Force Leading Aircraftman Gilbert Clarke who is 97, lays a wreath at the Commonwealth Memorial Gates in London
As the UK gears up for the landmark 75th anniversary of the Empire Windrush landing at Tilbury in 1948, bringing in the era of modern multiculturalism, representatives of every Commonwealth nation gathered at the Memorial Gates, near Buckingham Palace. The Voice’s executive editor, Paulette Simpson, laid a wreath on behalf of the Windrush Commemoration Committee.
The BBC man’s uncles, Cecil and Renny, left Jamaica to work respectively as munitions driver and maintenance staff for the RAF. Cecil then encouraged Mr Myrie’s father to come to Britain a decade later. Sue Liburd, director of the National Windrush Museum, and a former research member of the Council for the Memorial Gates, told“Over five million men and women [from what is now the Commonwealth] lost their lives in the Great Wars, and it’s important particular for us as ethnic minorities to honour that, and it’s our forefathers and foremothers that we’re honouring today.”
