There have been 1,814 confirmed cases of monkeypox across the United States, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention."Monkeypox is a rare disease caused by infection with the monkeypox virus," per the agency."Monkeypox virus is part of the same family of viruses as variola virus, the virus that causes smallpox. Monkeypox symptoms are similar to smallpox symptoms, but milder, and monkeypox is rarely fatal. Monkeypox is not related to chickenpox.
Gottlieb also said problems with containment come from not testing a wide enough focus population and that there may be too much emphasis on testing gay men. Cities across the country have struggled to get populations most affected by monkeypox vaccinated due to a lack of vaccines. Washington, D.C., Mayor Muriel Bowser, also speaking on Face the Nation, said her city needed far more monkeypox vaccine doses than have been provided.
