William Friedkin's Sorcerer needs rediscovery.
Summary SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT The late, great William Friedkin's best movie Sorcerer was beaten at cinemas by Star Wars in 1977 and is more than deserving of rediscovery. The 1970s were a golden era for so-called auteur cinema, with that decade alone seeing filmmakers like Martin Scorsese, Brian DePalma, Steven Spielberg and many more raising to prominence.
Sadly, a little sci-fi movie named Star Wars was released about a month before Sorcerer and proceeded to become a pop culture phenomenon. Audiences were swept away by Star Wars, which became one of the most defining blockbusters ever produced and spawned a multimedia saga that is running to this day. The incredible escapist fantasy Star Wars offered meant that few were interested in the dark, nihilistic character study that Friedkin's Sorcerer was offering up.
Nevertheless, this somewhat confusing title worked against it, as did the fact the first 20 minutes feature no English dialogue. Instead, the opening features a series of vignettes set in countries like France or Israel that introduce Sorcerer's "heroes." These subtitled sections led to mass walkouts at screenings, with audiences believing they were watching a foreign language film.
