Will Ferrell and Ryan Reynolds' Christmas musical Spirited gets mixed first reviews
just can’t reach, though it tries hard. The film is slow to get going but really finds itself when Ferrell's and Reynolds’ characters start sticking to the Dickensian script and then entertainingly veer off of it. Both have complementary comedy styles that lift the plot and the musical numbers – they have one rather joyous duet with cockney accents aplenty,"Good Afternoon," that’s all about telling somebody off Victorian-era style.
The source material — yes, remade many times in films and on TV — is achingly, clearly sincere. And a few parts of, from co-writers Sean Anders and John Morris, are aiming for sincerity in 21st-century packaging. But much of the film's personality aligns with the smugness that Reynolds evinces in so many of his recent projects.
