Across the North Shore, from Incline Village to Tahoe City, drones are replacing fireworks.
, hotels are booked, beaches are packed and come night, the booms of fireworks echo across the basin.
But this year, at least one thing will be different. No more booms, ahhs and ohhs. Instead, hundreds of drones will take off for a choreographed patriotic celebration. “All of North Shore will be a drone show,” said Andy Chapman, president and CEO of the Incline Village Crystal Bay Visitors Bureau. “It’s a new way to celebrate. We think it’s going to be just as dynamic, just as celebratory as a fireworks show.”
North Tahoe’s fireworks have always been ignited on barges in the middle of the lake, Chapman said, supervised by local fire departments. However, the permitting, labor and risk of fireworks are all great costs, outweighing the added expense of drones. Incline Village’s budget for the drone show balances to about $130,000, a slight uptick compared with the $110,000 spent on fireworks in 2019.
