Fueled by hot, windy weather and dry vegetation, the fast-moving Bootleg Fire in Oregon has forced hundreds of evacuations and threatened power transmission lines to California
As a heat wave envelops the western U.S., a fast-moving fire in Oregon forced hundreds of evacuations and threatened power transmission lines to California.
The 153,535-acre fire in south central Oregon is one of several burning across the region Monday as extreme temperatures continue to create dangerous fire conditions. The Bootleg Fire in the Fremont-Winema National Forest burned without any containment as of Monday morning, a public information officer assigned to the incident said.
Fueled by hot, windy weather and dry vegetation, fire conditions became so severe that firefighters were forced Saturday to retreat from the front lines to designated safety areas and the Klamath County Sheriff’s Office began issuing citations and warning of potential arrests if residents in certain evacuation zones chose to stay or tried to re-enter.
“Firefighters are seeing conditions they have never seen before,” incident commander Al Lawson said Saturday evening. Circumstances improved slightly overnight Sunday and into Monday morning, as wind slowed and firefighting personnel increased to over 1,000, said Rich Saalsaa, a public information officer with the Oregon State Fire Marshal. After doubling in size over the past four days, the fire grew from about 147,000 acres Sunday to 153,535 acres Monday, the least amount of growth seen so far, Mr. Saalsaa said.
