Thomas Jane portrayed Frank Castle in Jonathan Hensleigh's The Punisher, but he would subsequently be succeeded not once but twice. The Punisher has had a curious history his live-action adaptations compared to most other Marvel characters, first being played by Dolph Lundgren in 1989's The Punisher. Jane would later assume role in 2004's The Punisher, which was a moderate success and set up Castle's continued vigilante tale in The Punisher 2.
In an official letter to Ain't It Cool News, Jane said, "What I won't do is spend months of my life sweating over a movie that I just don't believe in. I've always loved the Marvel guys, and wish them well. Meanwhile, I'll continue to search for a film that one day might stand with all those films that the fans have asked me to watch." This would point to creative differences over the direction of The Punisher 2 as being the primary reason for Jane's departure.
Unfortunately, Punisher: War Zone became the lowest-earning Marvel Comics movie to be released theatrically upon its December 5, 2008 release, with the movie itself receiving mixed reviews. This also made Stevenson's Punisher tenure a one-and-done, though he later returned in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, playing Volstagg of the Warriors Three in the Thor movies. Despite its box office failure, Punisher: War Zone itself would come to develop somewhat of a cult following.
