Concerned about stray bullets and lead contamination, some Hawaii residents want the Koko Head trail closed until more testing is done.

and Koko Head. The park, trailhead and shooting range are all less than a mile from each other — and Kaumakani Street, where the residential neighborhood begins, is not much farther.

Community concerns have been raised that lead contamination from the Koko Head Shooting Complex could spread to the nearby Koko Head trail, Koko Head District Park and the residential neighborhood.“One part affects the other. It’s not isolated. It’s all interrelated like an ecosystem,” Tsuchiyama told SFGATE on the phone. The city opened the shooting range to the public, but gun clubs have used the area as a shooting range since 1937.

“Has anybody thought about the clouds of dust that come up from the range to the park, to our community for the last 70 years?” Tsuchiyama said. “Think of the baseball leagues and basketball leagues, the children who are playing in the dust in the dirt and the grass for 70 years — and the city is not talking about that.”

In January, Tsuchiyama sent a letter to Tommy Waters, the Honolulu City Council chair at the time when the shooting range was closed, requesting that the trail be closed as well, “due to environmental contamination.”The parks department told SFGATE it’s been working with the Hawaii State Department of Health on community concerns about the potential for lead dust in the air.

In the past, the health department did not find reason to be concerned, nor “imminent threats to human health or the environment, or evidence of off-site migration of contaminants,” according to a FAQ released by the parks department.
