Daylight saving time is nearly here, with many preparing for the annual spring forward, but some sleep experts hope to end the changing of the clocks for good.

The topic of the bi-annual time change has long been debated, even as recently as failed legislation to make daylight saving time permanent. But that, some experts say, could be even worseis nearly here, with many preparing for the annual spring forward, but some sleep experts hope to end the changing of the clocks for good., even as recently as failed legislation to make daylight saving time permanent. But that, some experts say, could be even worse than the current situation.

Daylight saving time later became standard in the U.S. until the passage of the Uniform Time Act of 1966, which mandated standard time across the country within established time zones. "When we're on daylight saving time, we actually are probably reducing our sleep in a chronic fashion. We think that it's just happening at the beginning of the time change, but there is evidence that we get less sleep throughout daylight saving time, because having more sunshine in the evening means we go to bed later. And not having sunshine in the morning can sometimes mean that we also don't go to bed earlier," Rowley said.

The AASM stance also mirrors similar takes from other organizations, including the National Sleep Foundation, which said"seasonal time-changes are disruptive to sleep health and should be eliminated." Since Daylight Saving Time is already in effect during the summer, the earliest sunrise of the year and the latest sunset of the year will remain unaffected.
