This week’s tour has built up his arsenal of weapons and could tip the balance on the battlefront as Ukraine moves to regain territory occupied by Russia
His shuttle diplomacy, which took him Rome, Berlin, Paris, the western German city of Aachen and Chequers near London, elicited pledges of tanks, drones, rockets and training for troops. It has also edged allies to firm up their political commitments, with new efforts to ensure Russia is held legally accountable in the international arena.
Last week, even before President Zelensky met Rishi Sunak, Britain became the first country to supply Ukraine with long-range missiles when it agreed to sendto Kyiv – to which Mr Sunak on Monday also added “hundreds” of air-defence weapons and long-range attack drones. Before that, President Zelensky’s spring break took him to Rome on Saturday, meeting Pope Francis and Prime Minister, Giorgia Meloni. Mrs Meloni, whose right-wing coalition government includes apologists for Russian President, Vladimir Putin, insisted she would ramp up military and financial aid, including anti-aircraft defence.
