Serena Williams earned an estimated $45.3 million over the last 12 months, but the lower revenue in women’s sports leagues keeps other female athletes trailing their male counterparts.
Williams has been a stalwart of the list, ranking among the top 50 six times in the last nine years and making more than $470 million in all since turning pro in 1995. But she has not always had company. Dating to at least 2012, only three other women have ranked in the top 50: Osaka and the now-retired Maria Sharapova and Li Na. In 2017, 2018 and 2019, there were no women on the top-50 list.

The real issue is on-field compensation, from salaries and prize money, and that comes down to league revenue. Alast year measured the value of all women’s sports broadcast rights in the U.S. at $47.7 million, a 29% jump from 2021 but still microscopic next to the $2.66 billion that the NBA alone averages in its rights deals with ESPN and Turner Sports. And the NBA, of course, is expecting to at least double that fee in new agreements that would start with the 2025-26 season.
Women come out better relative to the men in individual sports, but even in tennis, where all four Grand Slam tournaments have offered equal pay since 2007, a gender gap persists at smaller events. At this month’s Italian Open, for instance, the women’s prize pool of $3.9 million isWomen’s sports do have momentum, with new owners flooding into the National Women’s Soccer League and TV ratings rising for women’s basketball.
But that is still only about a third of what the men made at the World Cup in Qatar last year. And until that chasm closes, female athletes will be starting from behind in the earnings race.
