Obi-Wan Kenobi had a major problem with filming the character's blue lightsaber, but Zack Snyder and his team managed to make the same trick work for Watchmen. A majority of the Disney Star Wars movies and TV shows have been praised for the exceptional filmmaking and visual appeal, with the lightsaber duels always being a highlight. However, Obi-Wan Kenobi received some criticism in regard to its visuals, and now a significant problem with Obi-Wan's lightsaber has been observed.
SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT A group of VFX artists on the Corridor Crew YouTube channel examined the techniques used to bring Doctor Manhattan to life in Watchmen, noting why a similar approach didn't work for Obi-Wan's blue lightsaber in Obi-Wan Kenobi. Doctor Manhattan's costume and Obi-Wan's lightsaber both used blue LED lights on set that would reflect on their surroundings, but because of how digital cameras take in color, the amount of blue light hurt the image in Obi-Wan Kenobi. Meanwhile, Watchmen was shot on film and didn't suffer from the same problem.
Obi-Wan Kenobi Needed To Learn From Watchmen's Success The different filming techniques are strange, particularly given Star Wars: The Force Awakens was also shot on film, explaining why that movie's nighttime duel with a glowing blue lightsaber didn't suffer the same problem as Obi-Wan Kenobi.
