Sophia Lillis, who plays a Druid in Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves, was heartbroken that her character’s animals would be pure CGI.

Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves stars Michelle Rodriguez and Regé-Jean Page reveal that Sophia Lillis was disappointed that her Druid's animals would be pure CGI instead of performance capture. Based on the beloved tabletop role-playing game, Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves follows a misfit band of adventurers who embark on a quest to recover a lost relic.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT In a recent interview with BBC Radio 1, Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves cast members Rodriguez and Page reveal that Lillis actually did a great deal of animal research with the expectation that she would be doing the performance capture for her character's different creature forms in the movie.

Page: “Did you know that Sophia also studied all of the animals that she turns into? This is the tragedy of Sophia Lillis.”Page: “She thought she was going to go full ‘Andy Serkis’ on this and legit studied the movements of every animal, which is so badass.

Despite featuring some lackluster CGI in certain sequences, Doric's creatures, for the most part, look quite good. Allowing Lillis to do performance capture, however, would have given the animals an extra layer of emotion, turning them more into fully-fledged characters rather than just fantasy beasts.

Of course, no discussion of performance capture would be complete without mentioning the recently-released Avatar: The Way of Water. The film arguably features the best CGI ever put to screen and performance capture is integral to making the film's alien characters feel like real beings with real emotions.
