Jordan pitches himself as the only contender who can unite the fractured caucus. Scalise argues his own track record shows he can “bring together the diverse array of viewpoints within our conference to build consensus where others thought it impossible.” Whoever lands the job Jordan and his wife, Polly, have been a couple since he was 13 and she was 14. She initially home-schooled their four children and later became public school art teacher. They live on an 8.5-acre farm in Ohio’s Champaign County, within a few miles of his parents, his siblings and his wife’s siblings. A painting she did of their Ohio property hangs over the desk in Jordan’s Capitol Hill office.
”I was looking for a new challenge and got an interest in trying to make a difference for families,” Jordan said in a past interview. “You become more aware of how important families are. They are the key institution in our culture. The reason I got into politics was to try to make a difference for that key institution, whether it was tax policy, education policy or whatever.”
Jordan instead began accumulating political clout by becoming head of the conservative Republican Study Committee, and subsequently co-founding and leading the House Freedom Caucus.he and other members of the Freedom Caucus started out as “backbenchers” far removed from party leaders, and used their ability to withhold their votes on must-pass legislation to achieve their objectives.
He credits a “vote of no confidence” in Boehner introduced by fellow Freedom Caucus stalwart Mark Meadows, a former North Carolina congressman who went on to be Trump’s chief of staff, with triggeringthat he thought he’d win the vote but didn’t want to put the House of Representatives through such a divisive exercise, so he moved up his already-planned retirement.
