The state had observed it along with the rest of the country, but legislation signed by President Richard Nixon in 1972 put most of Indiana on Eastern Standard Time year-round.

Under the law, the northwestern and southwestern counties, including Evansville's Vanderburgh County, would be on Central time but observe DST in the summer/fall. Looking back at Indiana's complicated relationship with daylight saving time After his election in 2004, Gov. Mitch Daniels pushed to have Indiana observe DST, saying not keeping in step with cities around the nation was bad for business. A complicated series of votes and maneuvers in 2005 eventually got a bill through the Indiana General Assembly, where it was signed by Daniels. All Indiana counties were to observe DST, though Vanderburgh and the 11 other counties in the state's western corners would be on Central time.
