SFGATE reached out to California's 12 most populous counties and asked how election administrators will count and report ballots. Here's what they said.
California's primary will be June 7. Ballots need to be postmarked on or before June 7 and must arrive at a county election office no later than seven days after Election Day in order to count.primary election on Tuesday, but county elections officials are anticipating millions more will need to be counted before the election is officially certified in the coming weeks.
The county will post a second batch at 9:45 p.m. That batch will contain some of the votes cast in-person at polling places. Another batch of such results will be released at 10:45 p.m. That will be the last batch released until all polling places have reported, at which time the county will release a final summary report.
As for mail ballots received after June 7, the county will release updated results every Tuesday and Friday around 4 p.m. until all votes in the county have been tabulated.San Diego said its first update will contain both mail ballots and early in-person votes, and will be released shortly after polls close on election night.
The second will come at 9:30 p.m., and will contain the first batch of in-person results from the state’s early voting period as well as in-person Election Day votes. Another batch of in-person vote results will be released at 10 p.m., and the final batch of in-person results released on election night will come at 10:30 p.m.
