Animals Matter: Encounters with loose and stray dogs happen every day
Any dog can bite, and when owners let their dogs roam the neighborhood, they will establish more territory.. As a runner, I am very conscious of loose dogs. I always listen for the sound of nails clicking on the cement and barking. Fortunately, the dogs on my route turn away once I start walking and talking to them. The fact that the gentleman was getting out of his car when the dog attacked is scary.

When confronted with an aggressive dog, reach down toward the ground as if picking up a rock and hold your arm above your head as if preparing to throw the rock. They have always backed off when I have used this method.The key to your advice here is"as if." Dogs intuitively understand human body language very well.
