This was supposed to be the moment for FC Dallas, the time when the club that has earned so much respect for its player production in the United States burst...
“How are all these U.S. stars coming from the same team?” we imagined Spanish scouts and British journalists exclaiming. We’d smile, knowingly of course, and point to the academy fields of North Texas.Well, fizzled might be harsh. Plenty of clubs around the world dream of putting a single academy graduate at the World Cup and never do so.FCD product Weston McKennie, a Little Elm native, started every game and played 275 minutes at the tournament.U.S.
And, look, maybe some of it was on us. We’ll always cover FCD, the team in our backyard, from an objective angle. But you’re always going to grow fond of people you see often and hope they push on to bigger things. Still, it seemed so possible there would be many more players with FCD ties making a difference in Qatar, and not only for the U.S. national team but potentially even Mexico, Ecuador and beyond.so many expected with Dallas proving it’s a world-class soccer town never really came.
So too was FCD winger Paul Arriola, an apparent casualty of Berhalter and a coaching staff that included ex-FCD head coach Luchi Gonzalez deciding to bolster the fullback position with five outside backs on the roster, trimming the number of attackers who made the plane. Pepi and Ferreira both will still be very much in frame for selection, while McKennie is a cornerstone who at age 24 should be at the next tournament barring injury or a serious drop-off in form. Center back Chris Richards suffered one of those injuries, or the FCD academy graduate would’ve made Berhalter’s roster and likely started at least one match in Qatar.
FCD owner and president Dan Hunt is keeping his expectations reasonable while still hoping to supply a fair number of players to the U.S. as it seeks to reach the highest level of the international men’s game.
