The San Antonio Independent School District will hold public meetings in August that could lead to school closures and other changes.
Alejandra Lopez, president of the San Antonio Alliance of Teachers and Support Personnel, speaks at a June 22 news conference of the Schools Our Students Deserve Coalition. The group has said school closures should be a measure of last resort in improving efficiencies in the San Antonio Independent School District.
The district’s board of trustees will hear an initial recommendation from the staff at its Sept. 18 meeting, then is expected to vote on a slate of changes Nov. 13. The district has seen enrollment fall from 61,112 students in 1998 to 45,285 this year — lower than the “worst case scenario” it projected in 2011, amid inadequate housing, decreasing birth-rates and demographic changes affecting San Antonio’s urban core.
SAISD Superintendent Jaime Aquino said the district's resources have been spread too thin after decades of declining enrollment. The rightsizing framework, in its final form following the community meetings in August, will serve as a tool for generating a list of school buildings that may be considered for consolidation or closure, or that are underutilized but could receive more students. Thehas three primary criteria: enrollment, facility usage and cost per pupil at each school facility.
