What now for Serena? Wimbledon2022
BEATEN: Serena Williams
Williams had initially stuttered to find her rhythm and was edged out of the opening set as she showed some rustiness. Both her choice and execution of shots were not up to her extremely high standard. A combination of inexperience from Tan and the never-say-die attitude from Williams, visibly lifted by the amazing support from the jam-packed court, resulted in the US legend not only saving match point but storming into a 4-1 lead in the deciding tiebreak.
Just 15 minutes after being unable to clinch her first match point, Tan was presented with two more at 9-7. The atmosphere was electric and it erupted when the 23-time Grand Slam winner hooked her forehand shot into the net to gift Tan victory. Williams, now ranked outside of the world’s top thousand following a year off the WTA Tour because of leg and hamstring injuries, was understandably not so upbeat and revealed: “Physically I did pretty good. The last couple of points I was really suffering, but I feel like winning those key points is something mentally you have to have.
