More than 200 flights to and from Sicily were disrupted on Monday after the eruption of Mount Etna forced Catania airport to close efeatherstone_ reports

The airport is around a 50km-drive south of Etna and flight operations were suspended until 8pm on Monday as a result of activity and resulting volcanic ash.

There were 235 flights scheduled to arrive and depart from Catania airport on Monday, to aviation analytics firm‘s most active volcano, erupted on Sunday night. Etna’s activity rarely leads to significant damage. A spokesperson for the airline added: “Unfortunately it is not clear when normal operations will resume. However, we are working closely with the airport and closely monitoring the situation. We advise all passengers who are booked to travel with easyJet to visit easyJet.com to check the status of their flight before travelling to the airport.”

EasyJet customers affected by the cancellations can transfer to another flight without charge or opt to receive a refund.
