The photographer Joni Sternbach has sought out female subjects who reflect her own sense of independence, loneliness, and isolation.
If Joni Sternbach’s name is familiar, it’s probably because of the photographs she’s been making of surfers in Montauk, Santa Barbara, Waikiki, and other beaches—from Australia to France—off and on for nearly two decades now. Her pictures are memorable in part because they’re true portraits, not wave-riding action shots, and because their stillness and formal beauty recall some of photography’s earliest images.
“Kissing a Stranger” begins as a seduction. Many of the first images are of women, a number of them naked or shown in closeup—an extended neck, a pair of hands. When men appear, they’re often lovers or objects of desire. One is wearing nothing but boxer shorts on a suburban lawn, another is bare-chested on a bed with his zipper down, and a third is as naked as the woman he’s in bed with.
