There's no officially agreed upon understanding of what "the metaverse" actually means. The term can best be described as a developing vision of the internet where multisensory enhancements, such as virtual reality headsets, enable users to do things like work, meet with friends, shop, and play games as digital avatars.
“You can think about the metaverse as an embodied internet, where instead of just viewing content — you are in it," Meta CEOtold The Verge this past summer. "And you feel present with other people as if you were in other places, having different experiences that you couldn’t necessarily do on a 2D app or web page, like dancing, for example, or different types of fitness.”
It appears that this vision of the internet’s future is being sculpted in large part by Big Tech corporations, like Meta. And given the fraught history of social media platforms, it’s worth it to be wary of what the metaverse is already unleashing.“I don't think anybody can say with certainty exactly what the metaverse is, or what it will be. I think it's still work in progress,”There have been debates about whether the metaverse is “here” or not.
Arguably, there won’t be a great migration to the metaverse because, in a way, we already experience forms of it. Many existing internet-based games incorporate a type of virtual reality and are already widely popular, with some dating back to the early days of the internet.
