Experts who study Covid-19 agree that for most people, getting infected for a second - or third or fourth - time is inevitable

Experts who study Covid-19 agree that for most people, getting infected for a second – or third or fourth – time is inevitablecases are rising in the UK, with roughly 1.3 million people currently estimated to have symptomatic Covid-19 – almost twice as many as in early July.

Prominent symptoms from a first infection of Covid are coughing, fevers and headaches with milder symptoms – often described as ‘cold-like’ for subsequent infections. Those who are fully vaccinated, or who have been previously infected with other strains of the coronavirus, are in the best possible position to fight off any infection.

A third booster jab was shown to increase protection from symptomatic Omicron infection to 60-75 per cent at two to four weeks after vaccination, but fell to 30-40 per cent after 15 weeks. Data is still emerging on Covid outcomes, including what proportion of people with repeat infections go on to develop longer-term complications. What the data does show so far is that for many people who get Covid multiple times, subsequent infections will be as mild as or milder than their first, probably because of partial immunity from previous infections, vaccination and the fact that the latest circulating variants generally cause less severe symptoms.
