a stark difference in search results between Google and DuckDuckGo. For instance, Google is more likely to recommend mainstream news sources, while DuckDuckGo is more likely to recommend independent media sources and user-generated content on YouTube and Reddit. When searching about controversial claims, DuckDuckGo is more likely to send people to the controversial site itself, while Google directs people to fact-check websites.
Given the proliferation of “free speech” platforms like Parler, Gab and MeWe, we need better rules about the sharing of hateful or dangerous content online. One way to do this is to start to hold internet companies accountable for the kind of information they promote in their search algorithms. Companies would have to disclose how they are making decisions and show reasonable safeguards for dangerous content.
