The world has tried many things to try and stop Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine, including arming the Ukrainians and sanctioning the Russians. But has anyone thought of simply asking Russia to stop?
Thankfully, the United Nations has finally taken that brave step. The U.N. General Assembly boldly voted to call for Russia to withdraw its forces from Ukraine in a 141-7 vote the day before the one-year anniversary of the beginning of the invasion. Believe it or not, this is actually the sixth resolution the General Assembly has passed regarding the war in Ukraine.
Of course, these resolutions are left to the General Assembly and not the U.N. Security Council because Russia holds an automatic veto over anything that comes before the Security Council. The Chinese Communist Party, which has been supporting Russia’s war efforts, also has an automatic veto to wield in that body. Russia was even a member of the U.N. Human Rights Council, and remained a member until over one month after the invasion began.
The U.N. is left to send what amounts to a sternly worded letter to Russian President Vladimir Putin because, by its very design, the body favors authoritarians and dictators. All of this comes at the price of about $11 billion in U.S. taxpayer dollars annually. That was the amount the U.S. contributed to the U.N. in 2020, funding the organization’s bloated bureaucracy while it propped up authoritarians and covered up a pandemic. The Biden administration has not only embraced this corrupt organization but wants to send even more taxpayer dollars to the organization in the form of “climate reparations” that China would be exempt from paying.
