No one person owns the narrative of a break up Both parties are entitled to take half of the romantic wreckage as their own, and repurpose it as they see fit 🖋️ RebeccaCNReid for ipaperviews
, and I’m not sorry about it. They’re my stories, my life, my narrative. Nothing is stopping anyone else from doing the same thing. It’s not my fault I’m good at it. And if I were as good at it as Teasdale I’d be doing very little else. There’s a dignity to turning former pain into brilliant music. There is very little dignity in taking pot shots at your famous, successful ex.
There is an enormous difference between turning life experiences into relatable content – books, films, songs, whatever – and using your alleged proximity to your ex’s talent to try and claw back some glory. The former is productive, inspirational, relatable. The latter is just a bit sad. On some level, I do get it. Last night Wet Leg played to 45,000 people in Finsbury Park, performing a song he claims is about him I’d be bitter too. I can resent people who are more successful than I am with the best of them. But I really want to believe that were I in a position where my ex was getting famous from songs about me, I’d get the guitar out and crack on.
By all accounts Richards seems to have a nice life. He lives on the Isle of Wight, he’s just become a dad. I can’t help but wonder how his fiancée feels about the fact that he’s sounding off in the press about songs which are allegedly inspired by him . Whatever the truth of the relationship between Teasdale and Richards, no one person owns the narrative of a break up. Both parties are entitled to take half of the romantic wreckage as their own, and repurpose it as they see fit. If your ex is making something beautiful with their half of the debris, then – if I could venture a little bit of advice – it seems like it might be time to work harder and rebuild better, not waste time firing shots at what your ex has built.
