Five victims spoke during Raymond Erker's sentencing hearing and described him as a con man, a thief and a liar. They said he was a narcissist, soul-less and morally decrepit.
U.S. District Judge Dan Polster handed down the sentence of 262 months, or 21 years and 10 months, on Tuesday in front of a packed courtroom of about 50 people. At least a dozen others watched the proceeding on video in a nearby courtroom because so many people showed up.
Erker late Monday claimed that he has already paid back $3 million to his former clients, far different from the $400,000 that prosecutors say he paid. Polster told Erker that he could pursue that claim, but that if he does, he could be subject to additional criminal charges if he’s lying. The judge scheduled a Dec. 9 hearing.
Erker then recruited new investors and used their money to pay back his initial clients, according to prosecutors. He also used the money to finance an addition to his house and buy a home in Lakewood. “I thought you were helping me,” she said. “You took advantage of me when I was in an emotional state after my husband died.”
