WEST OAKLAND — Firefighters controlled a fire at a homeless encampment under a freeway overpass Monday afternoon, after the blaze sent thick clouds of black smoke into the air.
The fire, near 34th and Wood streets, was reported around 1:40 p.m. Emeryville firefighters saw smoke coming in the area, sent an engine there, and crews began spraying down the blaze with an engine hose. Soon after, an Oakland Fire Department engine also arrived, according to Oakland Fire Department Battalion Chief Frank Tijiboy.
Firefighters then hooked up to hydrants, and used high-powered water guns mounted on the fire trucks to push a large amount of water onto the fire, Tijiboy said. The blaze was burning propane tanks, furniture, bikes, clothing and some assorted trash and debris. Within about two hours, crews had the fire under control, and firefighters were able to remove layers of items and debris to help extinguish the fire and put out any smoldering material, Tijiboy said.At the beginning of March, a fire
