Michail Antonio was left to eat his words about Liverpool but there is a chant that West Ham fans will also regret
Just ask Clinton Morrison. It might be over 22 years since the Reds won their famous cup treble of 2001, but the former Football League journeyman remains synonymous with Gerard Houllier’s side’s League Cup win that year.
Now a pundit on Sky Sports, Morrison has never been forgotten on the red half of Merseyside as a result of those ill-judged comments back in 2001. But he is not the only player whose words in the public domain have come back to bite. "I watched the game [Wolves vs Liverpool] because it was before our game and Wolves could have run away with it! They had quite a few opportunities. We've got them this weekend and it's a six-pointer. We've got them!"
"Joel Matip with a super performance against Antonio,” the German said. “It's a key moment in the game, they chipped the ball there. I don’t know how often in the past we suffered when we could control the ball. Today he had it once or twice and immediately the chaos starts. He did that really well.”
Of course, he wasn’t the only one of a West Ham persuasion to be made to eat their words on Sunday. The Hammers’ away support were forced to eat a piece of humble pie too. Regularly taunted by opposing fans last season, despite still scoring an impressive 15 goals in his debut year in England, the 24-year-old has started the new campaign in blistering form. Making seven appearances, with four coming from the start, Nunez has already returned four goals and two assists.
