Waunarlwydd RFC is a fulcrum of the West Swansea community; some of its most notable stars, current Wales internationals Liam Williams, Nicky Smith and former Wales Women’s captain, Siwan Lillicrap, spent their early years here, honing their skills and forming the foundations that went on to define their careers.
“We’re always chasing funding,” said construction expert Wedlake. “We need to keep the clubhouse open so we can have 200 kids come through on a Sunday morning, and for the 80 boys who play on a Saturday. The visit of record cap-holder and Swansea native Jones could not be any timelier as World Cup fever sweeps across the nation.
“Great oaks from little acorns grow - there's no other real route for having the numbers that we have, so it's essential for the Welsh national team and the regional teams to have a thriving grassroots scene.”
