Emmali Osterhoudt bought a wedding dress at a Goodwill store in Birmingham, Ala., for $25. She soon learned it was made by a world-renowned fashion designer.
Osterhoudt has been obsessed with weddings since she was a little girl. She grew up watching movies like “27 Dresses,” “Bride Wars,” and “The Wedding Planner.” She loves all the details — the flowers, the venues, the fun activities brides do with their bridesmaids, and yes, the dresses. If she wasn’t studying to be a nurse, she’d have been a wedding planner.
Osterhoudt has since learned her dress’s backstory. It had been at a bridal shop in Louisiana, but when it didn’t sell, the shop lowered the price. When that didn’t work, the price was lowered again. Finally, the shop sent it to , a bridal store in Birmingham. When the dress didn’t sell there either, Bustle donated it to the local Goodwill.Bustle contacted Osterhoudt after she made the once-unwanted gown into the belle of the ball, inviting her to visit the store in the coming weeks “to give me the full-on bridal experience and veil try-on.”Osterhoudt also inspired the maker of her dress.
Osterhoudt’s moment isn’t over yet; she has the dress but no occasion to wear it — for now. While she has a boyfriend of several years, the two aren’t engaged. Her boyfriend, Nick, isn’t feeling any pressure to propose. In fact, he’s helped Osterhoudt handle the rougher side to the unexpected burst of fame of the past two weeks: the online vitriol. He took to the comment sections of her TikTok to defend her against those criticizing her for buying a wedding dress without being engaged.
“I really love it so much that I kind of want to wear it on my wedding day,” she said, “when the time comes.”
