According to analysis by the International Rescue Committee and the World Resource Institute, vulnerable states which are less able to prepare for climate change events are more at risk, despite contributing fewer emissions than developed countries.
"The daily global temperature – as projected from station reports and model-based reanalysis – broke 17 degrees Celsius for the first time in recorded history on July 3, breaking the old daily record of 16.92°C last reached on July 24, 2022. Dr Melissa Lazenby, senior lecturer in climate change at the University of Sussex, says the world is shifting away from the usual weather patterns we have lived through all our lives.
Research presented at the annual Society for Experimental Biology conference in Scotland suggested temperatures in that range raised a person's resting metabolic rate - the amount of energy needed to function at rest. Once a person's body can no longer get rid of excess heat - a condition known as"heat stress" - the core temperature rises, which can result in confusion, nausea, dizziness, headache or fainting.
Prof Lewis added:"This is just the beginning. This is what the climate system can do at just 1.2 degrees C warming.19:30:28As we've been reporting over the last few days, more than 4,000 people have been evacuated from La Palma in the Canary Islands due to wildfires. Death Valley in California - the hottest place on earth - saw a high of 53.3C on Sunday, with temperatures there perhaps getting a little higher still over the next few days. That said, there will be rain for Ireland and Northern Ireland on Monday night that will take over much of central Britain on Tuesday, with showers moving in behind.
