Hernandez, who runs her own law firm, has also served Catholic Charities in Dallas, Genesis Women’s Shelter, the Stewpot and other important organizations. That work has rooted her in the needs not only of the constituents she hopes to serve but also in the broader needs of our region.
Hernandez has rightly zeroed in on schools and school funding as a top issue. That is a critical concern to constituents and an area where she can find common ground with many conservatives in the area. As she noted in our Voter Guide, “Most taxpayers in House District 70 like me are zoned to Plano ISD which sent nearly $190 million dollars in recapture payment to the state last year. The school district sent that payment while facing their third year of budget deficits for our classrooms. This arrangement is unsustainable and unfair to teachers, students, and families.”
Plesa is a capable candidate, but much of her work has been focused on Democratic Party politics. We don’t see that as a way to broadly connect in this district. Hernandez has a deeper background in work that isn’t focused on partisan advancement but rather on building up people.
