She says: “I’m well off compared to a lot of other people, but I rob Peter to pay Paul and I always have done.” For some, the library is at the centre of their world. One woman has been visiting for eight decades. “This isn’t a library, this is a community centre,” says another regular, 77-year-old Roy Davies.
“It’s lovely that people are coming to use us. Obviously, you wouldn’t want the current cost-of-living crisis to be happening but it’s just nice that people feel they can come in and just sit in a welcoming space. Unless they come and ask us something, we won’t question why they’re here,” Ms Evans says.
But just like their visitors, libraries too are warning of the increased financial pressure they face. A public living room is an “agenda-free space where people can be with others without anyone expecting anything, or being sold anything, without having to spend any money,” says Ms Herriman.
