Community members gathered Saturday on Jacksonville’s Eastside in an effort to help end the stigma of mental health and to express that help is out there for those who need it.

The event was hosted by the Safety and Crime Reduction Commission and was in partnership with the Jacksonville Transportation Association. It was held outside of the First Baptist Church of Oakland on Jessie St from 10 a.m. to noon.

“Oftentimes, there are excellent resources out there, but they’re not really reaching the families or the people that may benefit from it,” Hall said.High school students Kendall Ford and Courtney Smith could’ve been anywhere on their Saturday morning but made the decision to volunteer. “The fact that we have a resource like this within a Black neighborhood to show that they care about mental health means a lot to me,” Smith said. “It just shows that the community I’m in cares about my mental health.”
