After a similar version of the legislation stalled earlier this summer, with Republicans deadlocked over just how severe to make it, the ban breezed through the GOP-controlled legislature on Tuesday. Within five hours, both chambers overwhelmingly approved the measure—77 to 17 in the House and 22 to 7 in the Senate—sending the law immediately to the governor, who is expected to rubber-stamp it upon arrival.
“Just hours after Congressional Republicans introduced a national abortion ban, West Virginia lawmakers subverted the democratic process to ram through this extreme bill, and no amount of narrow exceptions make it any less cruel or harmful,”the president and CEO of Planned Parenthood, said in a statement, referring to a bill introduced by Senatorthat would ban abortion nationwide.
