A Ukrainian soldier who joined the war effort out of a sense of responsibility for her country is calling on President Zelensky to recognise same-sex marriage to give her the same rights as fellow soldiers

Ms Zyablikova addressed Mr Zelensky saying if he wanted a “motivated” society which could see Ukraine through its war for sovereignty and independence, then the LGBTQ community “should have those services that heterosexual people have”.

“So if we want to have a fully functional, motivated society which is going to sustain through those maybe years of the upcoming war, we should get those legal rights to people so they can sustain through this.” Recalling how her ex-girlfriend decided to cut her out of her life when the invasion broke out, the 30-year-old said marriage, with the legal responsibility that came with it, was “a way of making your connection stronger and do those things that you can legally do because any person in Ukraine could die any night because those rockets are coming.‘I had to take responsibility’

“I am 30, I’m in good shape and have no kids or responsibilities so I thought I had to take responsibility.” But those who once “had to be divided by police are now fighting together. There is a bigger evil out there”. Referring to a recent address by Mr Putin to Russia’s parliament, Ms Zyablikova said he used “Nazi” remarks while seemingly inferring that LGBTQ rights had been imported by the West and shattered “traditional” values.who launched his “special military operation” to “denazify” and “demilitarise” Ukraine, strived to portray queer people as “non-soldiers” fighting against “pure” Russian troops on the territory of Ukraine.
